Natural Breaks is a respite service of carers for people who are caring for a person (within the age of 16 to 65 years of age) who have mental health problems and additional related problems.

By offering planned and regular respite to the carer, outwith the home, it opens up opportunities for the carer to tend to errands, tasks, hobbies or just enjoy valuable time to relax. The person who is cared for will be supported by well-trained and professional staff to take part in agreed activities within their local community.

Staff will work on a one-to-one basis with the person, building up a sound working relationship with a view to enhance the person’s existing skills, confidence and abilities and to maximise their life experiences and opportunities. This is done in a person-centred manner and at a pace that suits the individual.

Natural Breaks Service also offers longer respite periods in the form of short breaks to the carer. The service will arrange periods of overnight breaks for the person being cared for, in conjunction with them and the carer. This can range from an overnight stay or up to approximately three nights. This is done in a planned manner, however the service can deal with crisis respite if required.

The Natural Breaks Service has the capacity of supporting ten supported people and their carers through a block fund contract with Glasgow City Council Social Work Department. All ten people are offered supported hours of ten hours per week, which is planned to suit the needs of the carers and service users. This can be delivered in various ways: as longer blocks of weekly support or more sessions of support at reduced lengths of time.

The funding for each person allows for their one-to-one support and any activity costs that maybe incurred during this which may be entrance fees such as cinema tickets, theatre tickets, memberships, snacks and meals. The cost of the short breaks and the itineraries, travel, meals and so on are also included within the funding.
