My New Home at Last! - Joe's Story
Our staff deliver problem solving solutions for the people we support every day. When Joe hit a stumbling block to moving into his new home due to COVID-19, staff at our Glasgow East Housing Support Services stepped in to help!
Here is Joe's story!
"My name is Joe. I am 41 years old. I have lived in the east end of Glasgow all my life. I have had a brain injury since the age of 16 which has left me wheelchair dependant. I have lived in a flat with the support of my family and a support provider for many years. This flat was not really suitable for me, it was not very wheelchair friendly and some normal everyday things were difficult for me. I have been waiting for a more suitable flat for a long time.
In August 2020 my Care Manager told me there was a great flat available in the local area and I would have a support package that went with it. He said this would suit my needs much better. I went to visit the flat with my Mum, brother and my Care Manager. I met with Nicola and Teresa from The Richmond Fellowship who showed me all round the flat and told me all about the support and the things they could help me with.
The flat was great, I liked it straight away and so did my family. The only thing that was needed for me to move in was a wet floor in the bathroom. Everything else was fine. I was so looking forward to moving in.
Due to Covid the Housing Association were only carrying out emergency repairs so they couldn’t fit my new wet floor. They couldn’t give us a date for this to be carried out so The Richmond Fellowship stepped in and speeded everything up and my wet floor was finally done.
I finally moved into my new home on 15th April 2021, and not just that it was also my birthday. Great day all round.
I love my new flat, it’s great. I’m now looking forward to getting out and about with the staff picking new things for my new home. With help from the staff at TRFS I am now independent in my own home".
