All aboard for Sheriff Park

Thursday 3 October 2024

The people we support and staff from our Sheriff Park service like to always get together at their house meeting to discuss, among other things, days out and activities they would like to take part in.

Someone will then take the lead in writing, in their own words, all about their day so they can share it with us!

This is Martin telling us al about their day out on the Waverley!  Enjoy!

"Steven saw a leaflet for the Waverley and brought it along to the house meeting and asked if anyone else would like to go. Everyone agreed that this would be a great day out and something different to do. We all agreed on a date and were looking forward to going.

We travelled by taxi to the Science Centre, leaving a little early and we are glad we did there was a massive queue! We got on and collected our tickets before finding a seat to enjoy the view. We were travelling to Dunoon then onto Rothesay and the weather stayed dry for us which was great!

Martin said it really was a great trip, the scenery was amazing all the way to Rothesay and my lunch was delicious.  My highlight of the day was seeing the engine room and watching the diesel engines turn the propellers.

Steven added there was a massive queue at the dock, but we got on eventually, we departed and there was a man telling us facts about the Waverley, it was quite interesting. We arrived at Rothesay about lunch time, and we headed straight for lunch, then had just enough time to grab an ice cream before heading back to the boat. The journey back was more subdued but still good to watch the scenery. Overall, I think it was a good idea and I would consider doing it again.

Gary said it was his first time being on Waverley which was great. Got to see the engine running. Enjoyed a cup of coffee and a packet of crisps whilst sitting back and enjoying the view. We went to Rothesay, and I had a burger and chips, before heading back to the boat. Overall, it was a good day out… best one yet I’d say.

Les agreed and said that he thought it was good to get away for a couple of hours of fresh air. It’s been a while since I’ve been on a boat, the Waverley is a good-looking ship considering age. Enjoyed a fish tea before heading back to the boat.

Mark said we only had a short time in Rothesay but enjoyed some steak pie, the pastry was amazing. Then treated ourselves to a wee ice cream. We got back on the Waverley which also stopped at Dunoon to pick some people up before heading back to Glasgow. Overall, I enjoyed the day.

It was a great day out by all, and we enjoyed learning about the history of the Waverley, did you know the Waverley that we see today was built to replace the 1899 Waverley? The current Waverley was launched in 1947. The Waverley is also the last seagoing paddle steamer and in 2022 marked 75 years since the Waverley's maiden voyage in June 1947.
