Craig is thriving at Abbeycraig!
Craig’s arrival to our Abbeycraig Road service has been very good as Craig has settled in quickly. He seems to be loving his personal space and has bonded well with staff.
After a week of settling, Craig’s second week seemed to be more stressful for him and he had more difficulties. Staff expected this and did everything they could to try to make Craig more comfortable. Craig has now spent ten weeks at Abbeycraig Road and staff have got to know him much better. During every support they have engaged him consistently, particularly with activities to help him look after his home, such as cooking and the dishes. Craig seems to like doing the dishes and is always happy to help with them when staff ask him. Staff have found out that he also really seems to enjoy cooking, so they have been encouraging him to help with cooking his meals. Craig is now capable of making some meals by himself!
Craig doesn’t like to go for long walks, which is part of his routine to support his health and wellbeing. Staff had initially been able to convince him, however recently he has been declining them, so staff decided to try with a shorter walk just near Craig’s house. Craig has done this once so far and he seemed to like it so hopefully he will do it again.
Staff discussed and decided it would be beneficial for Craig to reduce his ‘eating out’ food and have more homemade meals to encourage him to increase the amount of healthy food he is eating, especially as he has shown an interest in cooking. Recipes have been provided and there is a varied meal plan in place for Craig. In discussion with Craig, a new plan will be created every week and staff will keep supporting him to help cook his own meals too. Hopefully this will also help Craig to continue to lose weight which is a goal he has been progressing with.
Staff have also suggested introducing Craig to the gym to help improve his fitness, this has been added to his weekly plan and staff hope to be able to take him once a week at least. This will also be discussed as a team as Craig seems to enjoy the gym and prefers it to walking for his exercise.
Overall, as time goes on, staff hope Craig will continue to eat more homemade meals, increase his fitness and have more time and energy to find out more fun things he likes to do!
Staff will also keep building the relationship by asking questions and explaining new things to him.
Everyone is delighted that Craig has settled in really well.
