Sheriff Park's Recovery Walk
National Suicide Prevention Week - Sheriff Park Service
On the 15th September 2018 Sheriff Park Service participated in the Recovery Walk Scotland. This was to raise awareness for Mental Health, Suicide, Drugs and Alcohol Recovery; we registered for this as part of the National Suicide Prevention Week.
Three residents and two staff went along at 10am to Glasgow Green for the first part of the day, the Rose in the Clyde Ceremony. There was a choir singing and a few people told their personal stories. Everyone then threw beautiful red roses in to the River Clyde to remember people who sadly lost their lives to suicide.
Once the ceremony was over, around two thousand people gathered the gates to begin the three mile walk through the city centre. We were well supported on the way with lots of cheers and applause, making us feel we were doing something worthwhile and hoping to make a difference to people’s lives and their families.
We then headed back to Glasgow Green and were greeted by a live band, stalls and even delicious free food. There were also several speakers Recovery and the good work that they do.
It was a fantastic day! Gary stated that it was very emotional but he was so happy to have participated in the walk.
Steven stated that he had never seen anything like it and enjoyed the walk with all the attendees and having the chance to speak to lots of different people.
Jonathan stated that he would like to do something like that again and never imagined how much it touched people’s lives.
Julie and I felt very privileged and fortunate to be part of the day and we are now focussing on what we can do next with the Team and Residents from Sheriff Park.
